FFCEL Inaugurating 1st Wind Energy Farm in Pakistan
In view of its corporate vision for business diversification, FFC initiated development of Wind Power Project in 2006 upon receiving Letter of Intent from Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB). The work started in May 2007 upon allocation of land by AEDB in Jhampir, Thatta, Sindh for 50MW Wind Power Project.
The feasibility of the project was completed in January 2008 with assistance from consultant Lahmeyer International, Germany.
In line with Government of Pakistan’s Policy guidelines a Special Purpose Project Company, FFC Energy Limited (FFCEL) was incorporated in November 2009.
Progressing on fast track basis the Project Company signed EPC and O&M Contracts in February 2010 with a joint consortium of world renowned wind turbine manufacturer Nordex, Germany and Descon, Pakistan.
The project was awarded tariff of 16.1 US$ cent (PKR 13.7) per unit by National Electric & Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) in August 2010. The project achieved Financial Close on June 28, 2011 after signing Energy Purchase Agreement with National Transmission & Despatch Company, Implementation Agreement with AEDB, Financing Agreements with Lenders and receiving Government of Pakistan’s Sovereign Guarantee.
The Project has been developed at a cost of 134 million US$. The Project is funded through 80 % debt by Local Banks and 20 % equity by FFC.
The major highlights of construction period are as under:-
- Site handed over for construction activities – July 07, 2011
- First Foundation excavation commenced – October 22, 2011
- First Foundation construction completed – December 25, 2011
- First Wind Turbine erection completed – January 25, 2012
- The last Wind Turbine erection completed – July 21, 2012.
- Commissioning of all individual Wind Turbines and Electrical Equipments completed – November 22, 2012.
The project also assisted in promoting local manufacturing industry by production of wind turbine towers at Descon Manufacturing Facility at Karachi.
The Wind Farm Inauguration Ceremony was held on December 24, 2012 and the occasion was graced by the President of Pakistan Mr. Asif Ali Zardari, Chief Minister Government of Sindh Syed Qiam Ali Shah, Minister of Water & Power Ch. Ahmad Mukhtar, dignitaries of Government of Pakistan and CE & MD FFC.
The project is the First 49.5 MW Grid Connected Renewable Energy Project of Pakistan. It is country’s signature project and major milestone towards achievement of self sufficiency in energy production through indigenous resources.
Based on the historic wind data, the annual energy yield of the plant is 145 GWh or 145 million units, good enough for fulfilling annual electricity needs of 30 thousand average homes. All this electricity is produced from 100% Green and Renewable Resource i.e. Wind.
It not only provides cleaner and sustainable energy to Pakistan National Grid but also helps equivalent reduction in Oil Import Bill and aversion in depletion of Oil & Gas resources.
